In 1935 the State of Florida legalized pari-mutuel betting on jai-alai. "Pari-mutuel" means "partnership" in French. In pari-mutuel betting those who correctly select the winners share the total amount bet minus a percentage for the State and management. Therefore, bettors bet against other bettors instead of against the "house" as is done in a casino. The pari-mutuel system of betting is used in horse racing, dog racing, and jai-alai.
